HIRAGANA and KATAKANA are the 2 phonetical alphabets of the Japanese language. They are used in a variety of ways in combination with KANJI, which originate from Chinese and have a range of meanings. HIRAGANA and KATAKANA are basically sounds written down and are used in a unique Japanese way to make it possible to create connections, tenses and write any text phonetically. HIRAGANA is basically used for all normal Japanese words and KATAKANA reserved for sounds and foreign words and names that are incorporated in Japenese daily language. ROMAJI is used to allow foreigners to read Japanese words in an occidental way without needing to be able to read Japanese. A good example of this is their train stations where names are written in KANJI, HIRAGANA and ROMAJI so that foreigners don't miss their stops.

This page is about how to learn to recognise HIRAGANA and KATAKANA and find their HTML references, for those that are interested. You are not here to learn KANA, but you can use this page to test your knowledge. At the bottom of the page you find some references for KANJI and their HTML values.

IMPORTANT: For this page to function correctly it may be necessary to install the Japanese character sets. The design is based on the font Simsun, a tradicional design, and will default to your standard font for your browser if this font is not available. I.e. you may have to install that font set to get the best experience. If a character is not available in the default font set for your browser it will show a crossed box instead.
